About the Institute

Development Strategy

The Development Strategy of the S.P. Timoshenko Institute of Mechanics of the NAS of Ukraine for 2021–2025 defines the mission, vision, values, prospective research directions and main institutional development tasks of the Institute.

Mission

New knowledge for science and practice

The mission of the Institute is to conduct research aimed at obtaining new fundamental knowledge in mechanics and using this knowledge for practical purposes, to train highly qualified scientific personnel and to contribute to the innovative development of Ukraine.

Vision

A leading institution in mechanics

The Institute’s vision is to strengthen its position as a leading Ukrainian institution in mechanics and applied mathematics, while developing strong scientific schools and modern research directions.

Values

Principles of the Institute’s activity

The Strategy emphasises professional competence, academic integrity, openness, responsibility and international integration.

high professional competence
academic integrity and scientific ethics
creativity and team spirit
openness, cooperation and responsibility
academic freedom and self-development
contribution to world science and international cooperation

Prospective directions

Research activity

The priority directions are formulated according to the Institute’s scientific profile and statutory tasks.

Mechanics of composite and heterogeneous media

Research on composite and nanocomposite materials, non-classical fracture mechanics, auxetic materials, wave processes and high-performance computing.

Mechanics of shell systems

Development of numerical and numerical-analytical approaches to the analysis of structurally and materially heterogeneous shells, layered systems and complex shell elements.

Mechanics of coupled fields

Study of thermomechanical behaviour, durability and the interaction of mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic fields in materials and structural elements.

Fracture mechanics and fatigue

Development of long-term fracture models, analysis of crack-growth kinetics, durability assessment and investigation of delayed fracture in polymers and composites.

Dynamics and stability of mechanical systems

Development of qualitative and analytical methods for studying dynamics, stability, contact interaction, hydroelastic systems and motion control of aerospace systems.

Strategic tasks

Institutional development

Special attention is given to personnel policy, educational and scientific activity, international cooperation, publication activity and strengthening of the material base.

Continuity of scientific personnel

Preserving and effectively renewing the research staff, supporting scientific continuity and transferring experience to young scientists.

Postgraduate training and quality of education

Improving the educational and scientific programme in specialty 113 Applied Mathematics, developing academic mobility and strengthening the practical component of training.

International cooperation

Developing partnerships with foreign institutions, participating in international projects, conferences, joint publications and editorial boards.

Publications and conferences

Supporting the international journal Applied Mechanics, organising scientific conferences and increasing the visibility of research results.

Infrastructure and funding

Strengthening the material and technical base, developing the Shared-Use Centre and expanding access to scientific publications and databases.
