History and leadership
The Department of Thermoelasticity was established in 1946. Its founder and head from 1946 to 1973 was A.D. Kovalenko, Academician of the NAS of Ukraine. Since 1988, the department has been headed by Vasyl H. Karnaukhov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor.
Research profile
The department studies thermomechanics of inelastic materials and bodies under arbitrary histories of thermoelectromechanical loading. Its research combines mathematical modelling, coupled-field mechanics, numerical and analytical methods, and applications to spatial and thin-walled structural elements.
Main research areas
- Thermomechanics of inelastic materials and bodies under arbitrary histories of thermoelectromechanical loading.
- Mathematical models of harmonic vibrations and dissipative heating of spatial and thin-walled bodies.
- Numerical and analytical methods for solving coupled problems of thermomechanics.
- Influence of coupling between mechanical, electrical and temperature fields on the thermoelectromechanical behaviour of inelastic materials and thin-walled structural elements.
- Mathematical models and numerical-analytical methods for studying thermal fracture of inelastic passive and piezoactive materials.
- Numerical modelling of dynamic problems for inelastic bodies subjected to impulsive thermomechanical loading.
